At the Paul Hunter School of Piano, we offer personalised piano lessons for children, teens, and adults at every stage. Whether you’re a complete beginner, an advanced student preparing for examinations or conservatoire auditions, or an adult learner rediscovering music, our engaging and flexible approach is designed to nurture your passion and technical excellence.

We invite all prospective students to start their musical journey with a free introductory lesson, allowing you to experience our teaching approach first-hand.

Our Lesson Approach

Every student is unique. That's why our lessons are always one-to-one, individually tailored to each learner’s age, experience, and goals. By carefully matching lesson lengths, methods, and musical materials, we ensure students remain engaged, challenged, and consistently progressing. Lessons systematically develop:

  • Technical proficiency (scales, arpeggios, healthy technique)

  • Musical literacy (sight-reading, theory, ear training)

  • Expressive musicality (phrasing, style, emotional communication)

  • Performance skills (confidence, stage presence, resilience)

  • Cognitive and emotional growth (focus, creativity, emotional intelligence)

Lesson Types & Levels

Beginner Students (Children & New Learners)

Our youngest students (typically ages 5–8) build a strong musical foundation through imaginative games, familiar songs, and simple pieces. Lessons emphasise healthy playing habits (hand shape, posture) and introduce note-reading through enjoyable, manageable steps. Our priority is nurturing enthusiasm, confidence, and fundamental skills.

Typical duration: 30 minutes.

Intermediate Students (Grades 3–5)

Intermediate learners develop a broader repertoire, refined technical skills, and expressive playing. Sight-reading and ear training are integrated more fully. At this stage, many students start preparing for graded exams, though lessons remain flexible, combining classical pieces with contemporary music to maintain motivation.

Typical duration: 45 minutes.

Advanced Students (Grades 6–Diploma)

Lessons for advanced pianists focus on technical mastery, interpretation, and artistry. Students tackle challenging repertoire, develop advanced technique, and receive detailed performance guidance. Our curriculum supports students preparing for higher-level exams, competitions, or auditions.

Typical duration: 60–90 minutes.

Adult Learners & Returning Pianists

We warmly welcome adults, whether beginners or returning after a break. Lessons respect each adult's personal pace, interests, and lifestyle—covering fundamentals, favourite repertoire, exam preparation, or simply musical enjoyment. Adults typically choose hour-long lessons, ensuring ample time for personalised attention.

Typical duration: 60 minutes

Choosing the Right Lesson Length

We recommend lesson durations based on age, concentration, and musical objectives, informed by educational research and extensive experience:

  • 30-Minute Lessons (Under age 9): Ideal for younger beginners, providing engaging, focused instruction, and consistent weekly progress.

  • 45-Minute Lessons (Ages 9–12): Deeper exploration of technique, theory, and expanded repertoire.

  • 60-Minute Lessons (Teens, Advanced Students, Adults): Allows in-depth work on complex repertoire, detailed feedback, and thorough practice strategies.

  • 90-Minute Lessons (Diploma-Level Students): Extended sessions for intensive repertoire mastery, exam preparation, and detailed musical coaching.

(Lesson durations are flexible and tailored to individual needs.)
