About us

Welcome!

Welcome to the Paul Hunter School of Piano, where a passion for music meets expert tuition and a commitment to every student’s artistic journey. Founded by pianist and sought-after educator Paul Hunter, our school is dedicated to nurturing musical excellence, personal growth, and lifelong enjoyment for students of all ages and levels.

Paul maintains a thriving private studio in Angmering alongside teaching posts at Windlesham House School, Burgess Hill Girls School, and the University of Sussex, where he coaches undergraduate pianists. Paul’s credentials include performances across the UK and Europe, and he brings over two decades of experience to every lesson. This breadth of experience, teaching students from age 3 to adult, has shaped Paul’s vision of a piano school that nurtures musical growth for all ages and abilities.

Our Philosophy

At the heart of our school is a belief that learning music is about more than just playing the right notes – it’s about unlocking each student's full potential through the journey of piano learning.

Our teaching philosophy balances technical expertise with musical insight. This means students build a strong foundation in technique and theory while also exploring creativity, expression, and the joy of making music.

The school’s ethos is warm and supportive: students of all ages and skill levels are welcome, from absolute beginners to advanced performers. Every student receives personalised guidance tailored to their goals, whether that’s playing for pleasure, passing exams, or preparing for performances.

Students benefit from a rich array of performance opportunities, including studio recitals and carefully selected piano competitions, developing confidence and artistry in a supportive environment.

We are committed to providing a comprehensive and tailored piano education for each student. Under our guidance, students benefit from an evidence-based approach – for example, lesson lengths and practice routines are informed by research on how children and adults learn best. We also recognise the proven holistic benefits of music education: learning piano enhances emotional well-being, cognitive skills, and even academic performance. By embracing these broader benefits, the school fosters not just musical skill but also confidence, creativity, and personal growth.

  • Personalised Pathways: Whether you aim for graded exams (ABRSM, Trinity, RCM, LCM) or prefer concert-focus and creative projects, our curriculum adapts to your goals.

  • Comprehensive Classical Curriculum:
A clear pathway from beginner through diploma-level, supported by detailed analysis of methods and resources, integrating best practices from examination boards (ABRSM, Trinity, MTB).

  • Expert Team: As the school grows, Paul hand-selects and mentors each teacher to ensure consistent excellence and shared pedagogical vision.

  • Performance Opportunities: From informal recitals and ensemble workshops to conservatoire-style auditions, we prepare students for every stage of musical life. Students are encouraged to participate in recitals, competitions, and festivals. Our carefully curated guides prepare both students and parents for these enriching experiences, enhancing confidence, resilience, and artistry.
